Hope and Trust in God

by Gelly Nic

If I may share a gem from my journey this month, it’s to trust with hope that God is sovereign.

It can be so easy sometimes to get distracted with, and magnetised by, the world’s ways. As the famous line in When Harry Met Sally goes, “I want what she’s having!”  Yet that may not be God’s plan.

God doesn’t make cookie-cutter people. Yes, my “cookie-cutter” shapes may each be individual, but God’s creations are truly individual, unique. His path for each is sculpted to create a perfect symphony. He knows exactly what is best. God pre-planned each day before any came to be (Ps 139:16).

According to my plans, I truly wanted to be in Canberra these past few days. There were a number of different reasons: an important conference, an opportunity related to my daughter, and an opportunity related to study. Each presented at different times in recent months. Yet, one by one, these doors closed. I wanted to be there, but God appeared to say No. Each seemed like a worthwhile door, but it still slammed shut.

Then this past week I arrived at a place of gratitude that I was not in Canberra. Last Tuesday I had a fracture confirmed in my left hand. It was simply an unfortunate accident, but it would have meant that travelling to, from, and around Canberra would have been incredibly challenging. I thank God that He protected me from that. Instead, I have been incredibly blessed by the wonderful support of amazing friends, and have been able to enjoy two days of conference online, travel-free.

Yes, God pre-knew what would happen. It does not mean that He chose it. God gives us freedom. Sometimes that freedom can result in mistakes, including fracture-making accidents. The accident was still the result of my choices. But my focus here is on His choices. God chose to close the Canberra doors. He protected me in this way, even before I realised that I needed protection. I am grateful.

God is sovereign. My hope is in Him. I can trust Him with closed doors, and I can also trust Him to open the right doors at the right time to effect His plans for me. May you too be assured, even in loss, even in brokenness, even when doors are closing, and the way forward is blocked. God is sovereign. God is trustworthy. Make God your everlasting hope.

“Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God” (Psalms 90:2 NIV).

Gelly Nic seeks to share God’s Word with others, that each may know and experience the incredible love and faithfulness of our God, who draws near to us as we draw near to Him (Jas 4:8). Her heart prayer is that those on the margins would find grace and true fellowship in God, and with His people.
