El Shaddai

by Semona Michael

There is so much happening around us at the moment. Floods, earthquakes, war, sickness and disease, ever rising prices and sinking economies. Uncertainty, pain and chaos everywhere, and while we try and grapple to get a hold of as much as we can, there is so much more that is completely beyond us.

Feelings of despair, insecurity and fear can easily overwhelm us.

But in and through all this we must remember that God Is Enough!

In Hebrew, El Shaddai means “The God Who Is More Than Enough.” He is the All-Sufficient One. The Bible translates El Shaddai as the “Almighty God.” Genesis 17: 1, 35:11.

God is in control, He alone is creator, redeemer, restorer, healer, provider, He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. -Colossians 1:17

It’s not always easy to surrender completely with childlike faith, to let go of all that is bothering us and to trust God’s sovereignty in every situation. To not be anxious and fearful. We feel better when we are in control and letting go and trusting God is a decision we must make.

Let us remember what God’s word says in Romans 8:28 -

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.

We will find peace and contentment in every situation knowing that whatever happens, God is in control! We will know that we are not alone and that He goes before us and that the battle is already won!

We have been made aware beforehand that we will face many trials in this world, as it says in, John 16:33

“I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

When people around us see our faith in action, when they see us at peace in every situation, they are inclined to ask us or they may want to know more so that they too can experience the same, this gives us the opportunity to share God’s love with them.

Faith doesn’t always come naturally for us, but that doesn’t mean we cannot connect with God. Whenever we begin feeling like He is not enough, we can pray for Him to change that. Asking God for firmer faith will prevent us from straying away toward fear and sin.

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

Prayer for me as a Christian is extremely important. It’s prayer that brings me before God with a connection showing me that He is enough! I can share everything on my heart with Him, cry out to Him, argue, plead, rejoice or just thank and praise Him. This intimate time with God is needed for every Christian. It is what builds every Christian and helps them grow in their faith.

As it says in Jeremiah 29:12-13 "Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart."

So let us remember that no matter what the situation or circumstance we are facing, or the immense suffering in the world that disturbs us, we know that God is sovereign and that He is Enough!

Semona and her husband Michael serve as missionaries. They have to primary aged boys, Lucas and Timothy. Semona believes that God is enough! Unending joy is found in Him and everlasting life through His son Jesus Christ, it’s her heart’s desire to share this gift, which is freely given to all who will receive.
